MENDOZERO'S PAPER CUP PROJECT
May 12-24
Grand Opening: May 12, 4 pm

MendoZero Paper Cup Project

Have you ever thought about what happens when you use a paper cup? When you throw it in the trash, where does it go? Does it just disappear? Think again.

Most paper cups are covered with plastic or resin that makes it unable to compost and biodegrade like normal paper products. The cups end up floating in our oceans, littering our forests, and eventually get burned into sky-covering smoke at a landfill. Every time you use a paper cup, you are hurting our Earth.

MendoZero’s mission is to promote the use of reusable cups. MendoZero is a group of middle school independent study students who want to give our community a visual of the average amount of paper cups used in Mendocino.

MendoZero will achieve this by building a large sculpture, on the Mendocino Art Center grounds, out of used paper cups that they have collected for a month by setting out special garbage cans with an explanation of the project and the MendoZero logo. MendoZero will have reusable coffee cups for sale donated by Thanksgiving Coffee, as well as cloth shopping bags with the MendoZero logo.

Just a little support from the community could help save our planet.

For more information visit the MendoZero Web site.

20th Annual Mendocino Coast Garden Tour
Donna Jensen Burke,
Garden Tour Poster Artist

Enjoy a behind-the-scenes glimpse of a diverse selection of some of the Mendocino Coast’s most beautiful private gardens at the Mendocino Art Center’s 20th Annual Mendocino Coast Garden Tour, Saturday, June 23, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The day’s activities include a gourmet vegetarian luncheon at Ravens Restaurant at Stanford Inn by the Sea, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Mendocino Art Center. The popular garden shop and plant sale on the Art Center’s grounds will be held two days this year, Friday, June 22, and Garden Tour day. The Garden Tour is the Art Center’s largest annual fundraiser.

This year’s self-guided tour includes:
• Gardens at Harmony Woods, nestled into a cathedral of redwoods, reflecting the owners’ penchant for collecting an enormous range of unusual and beautiful plants, including an emphasis on rhododendrons and conifers, with over 300 specimens of each.

• An organic vegetable garden and fruit orchard situated on approximately one acre, produces crops that are canned, dried and frozen for the winter months for the owners and their friends.

• An artist’s English-themed garden at the edge of the Pygmy forest, accented by a timber-framed English-style garden shed and a perfectly handcrafted reproduction of Claude Monet’s Giverny Bridge. The gardens have received widespread accolades, having appeared in Sunset and Coastal Living magazines and featured as the cover story in Country Gardens.

• An ocean view garden with onion top fences, meandering pathways, a wisteria arbor and a wonderful variety of rhododendrons, helleborus, irises, heathers, bamboos, roses, ferns and trees.

• An eclectic garden featuring a mix of annuals, perennials, shrubs and repurposed material sculpture, as well as a koi pond.

• Digging Dog Nursery, nestled among towering redwoods on a rural ridge top, features elaborately planted grounds covering approximately two acres. The landscape designer and co-owner will be giving two informative guided tours amidst the nursery’s surrounding gardens.

Ravens Restaurant, the north coast’s premier organic vegetarian restaurant, will host a special gourmet meal for Garden Tour guests and friends. From the dining room, enjoy the breathtaking view extending from the Big River Estuary to the Pacific Ocean.
