Akogare means unfulfilled desire. It might be the dream of returning to a certain time or place in our lives. The desire for an unobtainable love. Perhaps an unachievable goal. The potter desires pots that capture light, the painter puts this desire in the eyes of her women.

There is nothing complicated about my art. Whether I am painting, printmaking or potting my intent is straightforward. I love design. I love nature and natural themes. I enjoy the process of making art which includes making the paper, carving the wood blocks or mixing the glazes.

Making art takes me away from unhappy places and pain. It is the magic vehicle that is always ready to go if I am willing. Once in awhile I find a medium I especially enjoy. Right now it is porcelain and the discipline of coaxing the walls thinner and thinner until they will transmit light. It thrills me to pick up a cup to take a drink and see my finger shadows through the walls.

Yarrow Summers

Yarrow Summers, known for her wearable art pieces, became interested in painting when she took a beginning class at the College of the Redwoods and fell in love with the medium and process. Today, Yarrow paints in her Mendocino studio where she produces her unique style of uncomplicated yet profound narrative iconographic works. Focusing her imagination through her heart and soul, she invites the viewer to borrow her imagery to create their own story, add their own meaning, and thus continue a shared journey of discovery.

"As an intuitive painter I am intrigued by the alchemical transmutation of paint into art; the magic of color interacting with color and the shadow images that appear out of this process. I am inspired not by what I see, but by how I feel when I observe something that touches me deeply. Telling of love, spiritual pursuit, personal journeys, moments of perfect grace, disappointment, loss and finally, hope, my paintings are stories from my imagination and life."
